Ruth Ann Sturgill
Ruth Ann is drawn to painting with oils and watercolors. The artist prefers to start with a surface that she has applied some color into, setting the mood for the painting and getting rid of the cold, stark white. When painting with oils, she often works on panels rather than stretched canvas, feeling that it gives her more control of the paint strokes, eliminates light coming through the canvas and allows for more framing possibilities. Making decisions regarding composition and basic values are done in advance to allow the right brain more freedom in the actual painting process and still allow for changes that enhance the final piece. The artist works in a realistic style focusing on the beauty of everyday living. and enjoys painting directly from life when she can, while the majority of her commissioned work is done from photographs. She is most notably known for her portraiture work, but also enjoys painting still life and landscapes, especially ones done plein air.
Ruth Ann was among select artists invited to be in the “Masterworks in Miniature Show” at Gallery One, in Mentor, Ohio. Her work was also recently appeared in the online edition of American Artist. She has traveled across the U.S. and Canada teaching workshops, and when her schedule permits, continues her education by taking classes.
Her work can be found in many private, as well as corporate collections. The artist’s original ornaments are a part of the permanent collection of The White House, and the Governor of Ohio’s residence.
Ruth Ann is the co-founder of The Potpourri of Painter’s Society, and is the executive director and founder of The Visual Arts Network and also serves on the exhibition committee of ArtSpace Lima.
