  • Lightening My Plein Air Pack

Scott Burdick often does plein air studies, like this one ( Vermilion Cliffs , 2009, plein air oil painting, 9 x 12), on lightweight panels that are easy to travel with. I was watching a documentary about the Appalachian Trail the other day and was amazed to hear that hikers stopping at one particular...

  • Painting Upside Down

A few years ago I remember seeing some paintings by C.W. Mundy that he had created upside-down. I liked the paintings a lot, especially the looseness, with the large shapes of color and values. I hadn't thought about those paintings until recently. I was going to paint from a photo reference one...

  • Want to Loosen Up? Go Winter Plein Air Paint!

On a sunny winter day it's so hard sometimes to overcome the temptation to go outdoors with a sketchbook! Snow and sun make a special light and colors you never see in any other season. So why not to go out for a winter plein air painting session? Well, there are at least two main reasons that may...

  • Bring Together the Outdoors and Indoors In Your Landscape Paintings

Distant Echo Nocturne by Alice Dalton Brown, 2009, oil painting on canvas, 52"x30". Whether I’m landscape painting or painting interiors, I’m always drawn to the curious, in-between places where the outdoors and indoors meet. This could be an ivy-smothered barn that almost looks...

  • Re: What is original art

I agree that art is also the artists' perspective of the subject matter, not to mention the artist's particular style of portrayal along with their use of the medium, Therefore, is an original whether they like it or not... ,s ame as a group of plein air landscape painting. Plus, we all see,...

  • Re: What is original art

From my experiences, anything that is a group effort where someone is setting the pose or selecting the view or setting up the lighting, the still life, etc. - or you are able to look over someone's shoulder who is painting the same project could potentially be in question for contests. Whether it...

  • Abita Springs Plein Air

A midday plein air I did with while painting with a kid from my church. We painted for about 2 and a half hours i guess. I limited my palette to only a couple colors, brown not being one of them.

  • Paint This

Old Paint suggested that we post a reference photo and then see what people paint from it. I'm hoping that we get a large response that includes very varied interpretations of the scene. AA staffers are posting the reference photos so there won't be any copyright issues---ideally the resulting...
