That is Cenarth Falls in Wales. A beautiful location. I was there a few years ago visiting my wifes family. I also did a painting titled "Red Door" from the same village.

The limited palette is very common for my work. I find that everything relates better when they are close in value and hues.

Thanks for your comments, Stephen. This is my favorite painting! Perhaps it shows the importance of somehow connecting with your model. Payton is by far my favorite model so far and I've done a lot of work with him as you can see. He's a nice guy and easy to work with; we don't have a lot in common but somehow we've connected so it makes painting him just better than painting any hired model.

Access Denied

Stephen,

Since you are editor in chief, I thought that I might bring this to your attention. There is something seriously wrong with your program. I and many others are being denied positng on many of the forums for some unknown reason. When I try to make a post, I get the following message:

"Access Denied: Post Permission Denied

Either this forum does not exist or you are not allowed to post."

I have many post, but now, as of last week, I am being denied the right to post. Since I'm not the only one and since I have tried three different browsers, and I have removed all cookies from my computer, I must come to the conclusion that you must call this to the attention of your programmer!

Did you see the one I did of Andy ( "As the Crow Fly's") last year. So pleased I painted him when I did.

Thanks for commenting on my painting. Extracting the abstract patterns I find in actual places is an ongoing challenge with my cityscapes. I'm happy you enjoyed it.

Stephen,

Its been some while since we have been in touch. Back in '94 I wrote an article titled "Chadds Ford's Best Kept Secret" about karl Kuerner III. Karl's family and farm were on of Andy's favorite places to paint for decades which included painting's of Karl's grandparents Karl and Anna Kuerner. I have been good friends with Karl since that article appeared in your fine magazine. I go up to Chadds Ford to visit and it was common for Andy to stop by his home to see what he was working on and to see how they were doing. During a visit during the winter a couple years ago Andy stopped by. We spent an afternoon visting. Talking about art and the Kuerners. I had printed out some photos I had taken of Karl's grandmother Anna some years back and gave them to him. He loved them and commented that the particular outfit that Anna was wearing he had never seen before. We had a wonderful time that day and I will never forget it.

Last year I decided to paint Andy to have a visual memory from that day. I got out my tempera's and painted a piece I titled "As the Crow Fly's".

To me this is about Andy not taking the trodden path of many artist who are concerned about what might sale but to paint what was important to him and his life as an artist. I have made a point with my work to follow this because it really is about our lives and the people and places that mean the most to us.

I love your magazine and I would also love to see more of your work! American Artist magazine has inspired me for years -more than any class or workshop (and I've taken plenty of those too) I look forward to seeing it every month! In fact, I was thrilled to see my picture on the most recent cover of Workshop with the amazing Jeff Watts! You can bet I was showing it off to all my proud family over the holidays. (they of course wonder why it took you so long to find me, and refused to believe that I was the "student" and not the "master")

In regards to your self portrait, I'm not able to make it big enough on my screen to see it closely but in any case I think although group critiques in any other situation are extreemly important and helpful I wouldn't dream of commenting on it since I think it's a very personal thing. A self portrait is "how you see yourself" not " how others see you", so unless it's an issue of "not knowing how to communicate your impression"properly and you are asking how it's done, what others think of it's "accuracy" or "beauty" isn't as important as whether or not it communicates what you intended. That's what I think about that. Thanks again for the great magazine! Rita

I am a subscriber to 3 of your fine magazines and I am impressed with your editorial reviews of artist and artistic trends. Keep up the good work. I just upload 2 images to try out the system and it seems to work well. I try to always grow on the edges of what is comfortable so I press my comfort zone quite often in painting. It keeps me and my work alive.

Now I begin the journey of getting represented by a couple of Galleries so that I can concentrate on producing more work. My studio and home are quite full at this point. Painting on differnet grounds and Plein Air have been consuming as of late. Your magazine articles push my art in new horizons. what I have found out is the Horizon keeps moving as you get closer to it. I believe now...that the journey is the reward. Painting is extremely fullfilling.
