My Bio

  • I was born and raised in Ukraine, a beautiful country with rich cultural heritage and, as it is stuck between Russia and Poland, East and West, a split personality. I lived in Western Ukraine but that wasn’t “west” enough.  In 2003, I moved to California. It’s hard to get any more West than here!

  • I have been making art ever since I could hold a pencil, attending various art classes and completing a 4-year Visual Arts School for teens. I should have known I was made to be an artist.

  • Instead, I decided that being an architect sounded much better and infinitely more practical – and went to architecture school. I started studying architecture in Odessa, Ukraine, the old-school style with manually constructed perspectives and carefully gradated ink or watercolor washes. At that point, I loved it. I was making things with my own hands and I could touch the results. I was especially drawn to historic preservation and restoration, I was absorbed by the beauty of old European architecture. I still am.

  • My family and I moved to the States after my third year in school. I learned to speak English (prior to that, I was mostly reading and writing) and completed my architectural education at the University of California, Berkeley. I met my husband Terry and got married, moving to Southern California.  Our wonderful (and very active) son Elijah was born in August 2009.

  • My true passion is free-flowing, bold watercolor. I tend to be fairly loose in my paintings. I use large round brushes and a lot of paint and water. I welcome watercolor to be what it is – to run, to mix, to bloom, to drip, to splash – to play like a happy child!

  • My current work revolves around the exploration of an alternative painting support – Yupo synthetic paper. I am fascinated by its qualities – such as the ability to keep the paint looking fresh and vibrant. It makes it easier for me to express how excited I am about the colorful world that I see.
