I've completed my figure series, and learned a lot. I did a few on other papers and like them too, guess I'll continue to poke around a bit.
Did you get a chance to work on mylar with conte yet?

Congrats

That is a wonderful critique. I would imagine that it's difficult to know what may catch the eye of any given judge. Just like the general public, some are more prone to like landscapes, still life paintings, etc. It's a excellent painting and I'm sure it was enjoyed by the exhibit visitors. Thanks for letting me know.
Paul

Thanks

Thanks for your nice comments. It was difficult to decide on what I wanted to draw.

For my drawings I've been using Mylar paper and Conte pencils. Mostly I use 2B, it's softer and smears easier. I just purchased the stick version -- I'll let you know how I like it. I may also try pastels on Mylar too. Regarding any pitfalls or tips -- I would say that kneaded eraser seems to work best. The Mylar is extremely smooth and offers a pleasing surface to get in and use a blend stub and fingers. It's still new to me so I haven't had a chance to try out fixatives or mixing in other media.

You certainly hit on a truism regarding "art building bridges." I've met some wonderful people not only here but in other art functions. Art offers incites into who we are carrying us over cultural and language barriers.

How did your contest go?

Hope you have fun with the Mylar and Conte -- let me know what you think of it if you end up trying it.
Best,
Paul

Re:Aly's lion

Thanks for your comment on my drawing. To tell you the truth the math of perspective gives me a bad case of tired head whenever I even go over my own notes. I'm not really good at math. When I was growing up I liked math, but it didn't like me. When I thought I was doing good my answers were still wrong. My parents had very little education and no one else ever helped me. I am trying to gain understanding, and hopefully do some cool stuff with it in the future.

I have several versions of Aly's Lion and I try your suggections out in the computer to see what happens. There is always room for improvement. Your comment about dessert reminds me of my childhood, my family was very poor and I had 3 brothers, and 3 sisters, so if you didn't eat desert first you might miss out.

Again, thank you for your time, and I'll post a note on the picture page too.

All have some great captured moments. The series you did with the gate have a wonderful feel. The one of David is fantastic too. I really like the painting of the three girls at the beach as well. All are very well done. Why don't you post in the Gallery more? Either way, thanks for sharing them here.

Thank you so much - you are very kind. The dog portraits were a lot of fun to do, and the Napoleon matches their personality perfectly! The little boy was a commission and actually was much appreciated.

That painting is incredibly beautiful. You have a lot to be proud of. Best of luck to you in the show -- I take it the Calgary Stampede is a show. I think it's very well done.

How is your water painting coming?

Is that a portrait you did in your "My files"?

Thanks

I appreciate your comments -- glad to hear you like it.

My colors were:

French Ultramarine (in the shadowy FG)
Cobalt Blue mixed with Yellow Ochre an a bit of white (for the greenish water)
Cobalt and white for some of the medium tones
Added more white to the medium tone for highlights
Distant waters have Perm. Alizarian Crimson

Best of luck on your painting. I look forward to seeing yours in the Gallery!

Hope you continue to make good progress on your painting though.

I finished my painting and posted it about a week ago in the Member's Gallery. If you get a chance I'd really appreciate it if you could let me know what you think. Thanks again for your input in the critique forum. It's great to get input from everyone.

I've been painting about 10 months now and can REALLY use the advice. There is a lot to learn but I'm having fun with it when I get the time. It's easier to find time to draw. I'm looking forward to seeing your final painting too.

All the best -- Paul

Your Painting

Hi Valerie,

This is really turing out nice. I like all the changes you have made so far. I made a few changes in photoshop of areas I might change. There is an original photo showing areas I adjusted on a copy of your painting (they are in the my files section of my page). They are a subtle changes but see what you think. The main change is on the thumb, it looks much better on your current version but I think if you show more of the "web" part where the thumb connects to the hand it would make it more "thumb-like". Also I think a stronger shadow in the to make the muscle more pronounced on the leg would help a bit too. I added a rock to help give more purpose to the unusual foot position. Other than that I just "beefed-up some shadow areas.

Like I said, it's turning out really nice -- these are just suggestions. Hope they help.

Take care -- Paul

Your painting

Valerie,

I like your new version of this much better this time. The house add a lot to the piece. This is a very cute picture but looking at the photo there are a few areas with some quirky perspectives to them. You have captured them in your painting -- but not having the photo to look at the painting seems off, even though you have painted the accurately. Mainly in her right hand and foot.

That having been said I think it a wonderful painting. It's hard to imagine how you captured so much from a B&W photo. Nicely done -- keep up the good work!

Paul

PS Hope you don't mind the input.
