Award winning co-author of Divided Minds: Twin sisters and their Journey Through Schizophrenia (St Martins Press 2005) and often-honored poet (We Mad Climb Shaky Ladders, (CavanKerry Press, 2009), I started doing sculpture out of the blue in December 2007 and never looked back. In 2009 I "decided" I wanted to paint a portrait, and suddenly did so, which I may post in a gallery (First Love). But drawing never came easily to me. What I can say is that all my years of writing taught me the patience to say to myself that so what if I was "no good" at first. I was determined to learn and it if took a long while, so be it. I may have been 57, but at 58 now, I am a darned sight better now than I was a year ago! And next year I will be better still. What more can I ask? (Well, all I do ask, and of course only time will tell if it will be granted: it for enough time to do more art...)
Where this strange ability to do art of any sort came from who is to say...a side effect of serious psychiatric medications? Possibly. A result of mild brain damage due to shock treatments or neurological Lyme disease or temporal lobe epilepsy, or a touch from all three? Perhaps...All I can say is, I wouldn't give it up for the world!
