I drove to San Antonio to visit one of my girlfriends and she took me for a great tour of the Alamo and then a boat ride on the downtown river lined with shops and restaurants. I took a lot of photos. I used a number of photos of this scene as a reference when I did a public drawing demonstration at an exhibition. Using a 40 x 30 stretched canvas, 4 sticks of thin vine charcoal and one kneaded eraser, I drew out the scene freehand. People are fascinated in watching the process and I can promote the use of real drawing to create really original portraits. They always say, "what no ruler?". Right, after enough practice over the years and no longer shy about drawing in public, I keep it simple …. just the little vine sticks and an eraser. I enjoyed it so much that I kept that large one intact to paint later and started another in 24 x 18 size which I painted and this is what you see here. I may eventually paint the large version a totally different way. I don't know yet. That's the fun….having something to look forward to!
