Mother and children reading

11 x 14 Oil on Linen Panel; "A Good Read".  A good friend of mine has been kind enough over the years to lend me photographs of her grandchildren to use as reference. I am so grateful to her for this. This painting was inspired by one of these photos.

Donna MacDonald is an “alla prima” painter, painting wet into wet and uses expressive and loose brushstrokes. She works in both acrylic and oil, using a vibrant colour palette and incorporates texture into many of her figurative paintings. Her intention is to tell a story and maybe spark a memory of perhaps a walk in the park or a day at the beach.  Although representational she doesn’t want to tell the whole story of her figures. Her impressionistic style is meant to draw the viewer into the painting as a participant.

Although she is primarily self taught, she attends several workshops and classes a year including those of well known local artists Jean Pedersen, Karin Richter and Doug Swinton.  She recently traveled to Colorado to attend workshops from master painters Daniel Gerhartz, Scott Burdick and Sherrie McGraw whose work is an inspiration. She believes in the continued study of weekly life drawing as a way to keep her artistic eye trained.

As an added bonus painting has somehow provided relief from almost daily migraines which she has suffered for over thirty years. She believes she is doing what she was always meant to do and feels blessed to follow her dreams.
