Morning on the Lake – Oil on 16 x 20 Stretched Canvas – painted August 23, 2007 – It was the late 1950s in the Grand Rapids Minnesota area. I used to go fishing quit a bit with my good friend Al Thissen from LaPrairie, who has since passed away. We would be at the lake and on the water before dawn. There were mornings that were cold and crisp. When the sun started coming up the mist would rise off the water. It was silent except for the occasional fish-jumping, loon calling out and waives, if any, splashing gently on the shoreline. Sometimes the smell of someone brewing coffee or frying bacon on shore would come across the lake. What a great way to spend your youth. These are memories of that time and place and this painting is what I picture in my mind from those memories.
We recently revisited the northern Minnesota area, August 2011. Still beautiful, just a few more people..
