About Elayne Kuehler

I am Baton Rouge native, and known for being a romantic realist with a passion for capturing the beauty I see in life.  I strive for a gracefulness in my paintings and I paint directly from life, knowing that nature is the best teacher.  My chosen medium is oil but I love to work in pencil and enjoy gouache as well.  My forte is painting the still life in oil with traditional landscapes coming in a close second.  I find endless still life compositions in my own home, kitchen, and gardens.  I am absolutely astounded with Louisiana landscapes, especially the ones that encompass the live oak.  From the Southwest fields of wildflowers, to the Carolina hills, cityscapes, to the magic of the Northeastern states in seasonal dress are where I find most of my inspiration.

Drawing the figure from life keep my drawing skills sharp, and sound compositions are attributed to learning from the old masters, Vermeer, Corot, Chardin, Constable, Peter Paul Rubens, and William Trost Richards, among others.  I have painted for over 38 years and have studied with professional Arts in the Parks award winning artist Barrie Van Osdell, also with Carol Peebles and Auseklis Ozols of the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts and won each of their Faculty Awards.  I am a full time artist and teach oil painting classes in her studio and also teach workshops nationally.

I’m a full member of the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club, a member of Oil Painters of America, the American Artists Professional League, the Laguna Plein Air Society, the Baton Rouge Art League, Associated Women in the Arts and the New Orleans Art Association and a member of the International Guild of Realism.  I have won awards internationally, nationally and regionally.  My work is owned in private and corporate collections.  I have had many one person shows and participated in many group shows.  I am represented by Taylor Clark Gallery in Baton Rouge.  I exhibit at the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts, the Garden District Gallery in New Orleans and The Good Art Company, Fredericksburg, TX.

I have recently been juried into Paint the Parks Top100 and Mini50, PaintAmerica’s Top100 and Second100.  I was also recently juried into the Salon International Competition at the Greenhouse Gallery, San Antonio, Texas.  Wade Henderson of Cox Television televised and filmed an interview of myself and my work and the production, named "Delta Hands" has run for several years.  I have been invited for the sixth year to show at LSU School of Art Summer Invitational at the LSU School of Art Gallery in the Shaw Center and also the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts Annual Miniature Exhibition.  I have had my work shown in the Louisiana Art and Science Museum in Baton Rouge, the Zigler Museum, the Masur Museum, The Barnwell Museum of Art, The Woman's Hospital and the Baton Rouge Little Theater, and among many other establishments.  Other juried competitions I have been accepted into recently are the Richeson Landscape Competition, Oil Painters of America’s Regional Competition and The Greenhouse Gallery Salon International Competition.

Artist's Statement:

Being a Romantic Realist, I plunge myself into the beauty I see in life.  For me, and I think for many of us, there is a magic quality about being outside and close to nature, with the radiance of her glorious colors, details, textures - the designs they create; the vastness of the sky and the air that surrounds it all.  Painting there is a very serene and an extremely nourishing place to be and serves as a great inspiration to me.  My artwork is about peace, caring, order, tranquility, honesty and beauty.  I blissfully strive to render these qualities into my landscapes, as well as my still lifes and figurative compositions, to share the good and positive forces of life with all who partake.
