"Lee W. Hughes" oil, 30" x 24"

This portrait of Artist and Teacher, Lee Hughes (in the act of painting) was commissioned by my local art association, Somerset Art Assoc. for a retrospective of his works. He is well-known in central NJ and has been avidly collected. Lee also used to be my plein air landscape teacher. I loved to watch him paint…he was a bold, fearless painter, laying the paint on with thick impasto strokes. He was an emotional painter but had great depth of knowledge about his subjects. He could name every tree, bush or flower he painted and was famous for his landscapes and his iris paintings. He is an irascible old guy, beloved by all of his students. Too feeble now to paint, Lee has moved to California to live with his daughter and grandchildren.
