About Katherine Nelson

I was born in the Hague, Holland and spent 15 years living abroad in Holland, Germany, Turkey, and Belgium. I earned a BS in Art Education at Skidmore College and an MA in Drawing from SUNY Albany. I have exhibited drawings in many venues in the US and internationally. My work has been featured in both print and film media including: Artist/actress for a Carolina's Healthcare commercial, ABC's Extreme Makeover, a Palais de Tokyo Museum artist workshop documentary, a short film created by the HUB for my solo exhibition at the United States Embassy in Brussels, and national poetry magazine Willow Springs. I have taught art to all ages for over 20 years in workshops, private school, and public school.  My most recent work includes painted fiberglass sculpture which was exhibited at The National Cathedral in Washington, DC  and St. John the Divine Cathedral in NYC in 2014.

My primary medium is charcoal which I find to be incredibly fascinating and forgiving. I enjoy the process of additive and subtractive drawing techniques to arrive at a completed image in which texture is achieved through a good deal of patience. Charcoal allows me to express the dramatic lights and shadows found in the landscape using high contrast. The flexibility of charcoal gives me the opportunity to explore both softness and edge in my drawings.
