"I WAS HERE", sticker collage, 1970’s – 2011, Art Prize Entry 2011

"I WAS HERE" – This is my entry for Art Prize 2011. It is a sticker collage covering 40 years, 1970's through 2011, there are 4 panels, each panel covers a decade. I have included everything from popular music, movies, TV,  trends, festivals, events, technologies and anything else that can describe that decade. I have 1 newspaper cover on each panels decade of importance, 70s -Moon Landing, 80s -Reagan Wins Election, 90s -Rock n Rock Hall of Fame,2000's New Millennium. This is the digital version of this piece, It's too big to photograph really well.

The size is 8 ft wide X 6.5 ft tall, 2011 Art Prize entry. This is a newer unexplored medium. Sticker art has been done before, but I don't believe to this extent, telling a story to a timeline. It was a lot of fun to remember these times and create this through month's of planning and designing. Almost all the stickers are the original promotional items from their respected decades, only a few reproductions. The motivation for this artwork was to mark my timeline and show the things in life I have been here to witness, and in doing it this way, everyone can also related to their timeline older or younger.

About Charles W. King

I'm an artist that likes to try all mediums in all areas, if I can. I mostly work with graphite, but I've done oil portraits, landscapes, collages. etc. My favorite is black and white, always has been since I was a kid, but I enjoy the challenges of colors in oils. Always pushing to best myself, which is a never ending process as is the learning experience of being an artist. Education to your craft is key.  I know I won't conquer all areas of art, but I'll have the best time trying.

I started my first class in 5th grade and throughout 12th, after graduation attended art classes with Northwestern Community College,Lansing Community College where I studied many art courses, art history, advanced drawing,  as well as graphic design courses with Adobe products, Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign . Attended Figure drawing with local studios.  Over the years I've done commissions for friends and family, neighbors and  try to stay involved in the art world as much as time allows.  There are so many great artists to see and in this digital age it's an amazing opportunity to connect with others and learn.

Currently working toward having a solo art show locally in 2012.
