Harriet Tubman

Painted for the Artist Daily All Media Photo Challenge for July's "Americana" theme in gouache and watercolor pencils on hot-pressed paper from a Civil War-era photograph. The skin tones – including in the highlighted areas – have brown tones that the camera did not pick up.

Ms. Tubman, an activist and conductor on the Underground Railroad, said, "I freed a thousand slaves. I could have freed a thousand more if only they knew they were slaves."

About Alexandra Spencer

After almost 18 years as media relations officer for the Americas for a Fortune 500 company headquartered in Los Angeles, I've retired and moved to Virginia's beautiful Shenandoah Valley. Although I'm now a consultant to clients in the infrastructure sector, a whole new world of having time for art has opened up. And, I'm thrilled, thrilled, thrilled!
