FOURTEEN. Acrylic on linen, 40" x 32". © Fergus A Ryan, 2011
A boy lost in thought, with his bicycle. This is a memory of a moment in my childhood, when I was fourteen. My father had just died, and I went on my bicycle to Dublin's vast Phoenix Park where we used to go together, and sat alone under a huge tree for a very long time. The boy seems like a 'scion', a shoot growing from the old tree that represents his father — the tree's branches echo the boy's hair. A young elder springs up beside him. The boy who modelled for me is a family friend.
