Veduta di Firenze da Piazzale Michelangelo
pencil, 11 x 16 in
I did this pencil drawing in about four and a half hours looking over Florence from the elevated hillside square called Piazzale Michelangelo. I was a bit of a tourist attraction in my Panama hat sitting on a rock! To measure such a complex scene accurately I first held up my paper to the cityscape until it covered the vista I required. Then I made pencil ticks at the top of the paper where the main towers and dome were. That became my accurate scale for measuring everything else including the exact position of each building along the River Arno.
