About Karen Xarchos

Artist Karen Xarchos was born in Ottawa, Ontario. Growing up in a rural setting on the outskirts of the city, Karen experienced first hand the beauty of nature - a sensory experience she brings to her work today.

Since early childhood, Karen has been fascinated by art; she began sketching and painting at the age of three. Ask her why she paints and she’ll tell you it’s because she has to create. Happiest with a brush or pencil in her hand, Karen finds painting opens the door to another world - a world where bland becomes interesting, and strangers become friends.

Completely self-taught, Karen can’t really explain her extraordinary ability. The images she creates just seem to flow from her hand. Her admiration for the Baroque, Renaissance, Pre-Raphaelite and Impressionist schools of art have inspired her to find her own unique style that often blends realism with more painterly impressionism.

Although her true passion is illustration, there is no limit to what she can paint. Life drawing, animals and wildlife are some favourite subjects, and her past projects include wall murals, personal portraits, and commercial signs.

Karen’s unique, upscale creations can be seen in a variety of private homes around Ottawa, as well as various commercial spaces. A favourite of local interior designers, her work has also been featured numerous times in the Ottawa Citizen newspaper. Karen has turned her considerable talent to creating commissioned custom fine art pieces and her paintings have found homes in private collections around the world, including Canada, Germany, Greece and Japan.

Karen lives in the picturesque village of Richmond, Ontario with her husband Gus, son George and Billy the dachshund.
