Plein air field study — oil on birch panel — 11×14"
See those dark clouds? All us painters were lined up along this boat dock, painting furiously, eyeing those clouds. Thank goodness I was able to finish, pack up and retreat back to the Charlevoix Circle of Arts before the storm hit! First there was wind, then rain — and finally snow! This was the day of the big Plein Air Paintout and also the annual Apple Festival in Charlevoix, Michigan. The town was clogged with tourists, who rapidly retreated with the storm. The waterfront park was lined with arts & crafters tents. Once the storm passed, I strolled through the vendors' area to find many had zipped shut. The mitten vendor was doing a hot little business, however. I treated myself to a pair of purple fox earmuffs. Now I can plein air paint in style!
