Clayton NY on the St Lawerence River in the 1000 Islands Area was recently name Best Small Town by Costal Living Magazine. An Art Group I belong to was having a two day show and sale and foot traffic was light so on the second day I set up my easel on the corner by our sandwich board and painted the historic home across the street. I was able to direct interested passerbys to the show. Two weeks later I used a photo of the painting in the local newspapers to announce our two day plein air contest. The building owner came by the silent aution stand to enquire if the painting was available for sale and bought it. He also liked the buzz the plein air painters created on the street (as a business owner) and offered a significant contribution for future contest prize money. Capt. Bill Johnson was a notorious priate in the Thousand Island Region and is part of the colorfull history of the region. 11X 14 oil on gessoed masonite-plein air, July 2009.
