Beginning, mixed media on paper

Something different to take a little break…
This is from an old black and white picture of me that I like.I don’t know if this still qualifies as self portrait.
I did start with black watercolor, then black ink, then I refined the picture with black and withe colored pencils, then I used dried pastels.
The paper is a technical paper that is translucent, I will make some tests with different papers under. It was working great with all the mixed media.
I played with the idea that my source was an old picture adding the borders.
I did post pictures of the step I took to make this painting on my blog:

About Painting demos

Sandrine Pelissier

I grew up in France but have been living in Canada for the last 12 years, I am currently located in North Vancouver and work from a studio on Pemberton Avenue.

I have two passions:

-   Painting the effects of light with watercolor on paper through portraits and cityscapes

( and )

-   Building complex textures and edges with acrylics and mixed media on canvas (

I go back and forth between those two painting techniques, they feed of and influence each other.

Since 2002 I am an active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and obtained the Associate Membership status in 2010. I am also a signature member of the Northwest Watercolor Society and San Diego Watercolor Society since 2010.

My paintings have been exhibited in numerous juried exhibitions in Canada and in the United States. I had a feature article in the August 2009 issue of Watercolor Artist magazine, have been published in a few books including the next book of the Splash series,( North Light Books’ hardbound showcase of the best in contemporary watercolors) Splash 11 New directions: the Best of Watercolor, Splash 12 Celebrating Artistic vision , and the book, Best of Watermedia Worldwide (Kennedy publishing). I will also be part of Splash 13 Alternative Approaches, still in edit.
