Aurora Portal

This watercolor painting was inspired by a childhood memory living in northern Manitoba. We were tobogganing and the night was lit with a very bright aurora borealis. All of a sudden a very strong wind appeared and whipped the aurora into a swirl. Being a group of Trekkie fans we thought it looked like a portal to another world.

This painting is intended to convey the vibrating motion of the swirling aurora and how it lit up the night and our imagination.

MY STORY………..

Creative expression is one’s vehicle for revealing the spirit and soul within all of us. I have always loved creating my vision of the world events and images that inspire me. I am a self-taught Canadian artist and hence have attended many workshops to learn from the best and collaborate with my peers.

During my earlier years as an artist oil painting and pen and ink sketches were my medium of choice. However I always loved the variety of techniques and imagery that could be created through watercolor painting. In 2006 I moved to the Kawartha Lakes with my husband John and decided to focus full time on this challenging medium. I am continuing to evolve my style towards a more fluid, impressionistic style.

My work is represented by vivid colors and imagery from my past (especially those northern lights in northern Manitoba), the natural world around us (gardening maniac, exotic travels and walks with my dog through nearby forests) to our everyday lives with friend and family and public events that bring us all together (motorcycle rides, volleyball tournaments and water sports).  I love the outdoors no matter what I am doing.

I grew up on Canada’s military bases and later spent time as a reserve solder with the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment – Company A). I went on to pursue careers in medical laboratory science, project management, business consulting and post-secondary teacher. I never ceased to keep exploring a variety of artistic pursuits including stain glass and piano.

The Kawartha area artistic community is very supportive and continues to provide me with ongoing inspiration. I am currently a member of the Kawartha Artists Gallery & Studio, The East Central Ontario Arts Association, The Art Gallery of Peterborough and an associate member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolor.

I also like to help improve life in our communities. I have donated original works of art to organizations including The Art School Annual Art Auction, My Space Fundraiser, The Turtle Trauma Centre Fundraiser and The Festival of Trees. I also participate in the Muskoka’s Annual Foot's Bay Charity Art Festival for Autism.
