About Mike Haubenstock

Throughout my life I have been interested in art, but more as an avid museumgoer than as an artist. I have always looked at pieces closely, asking myself, “How did the artist do that?” That ultimately created the desire to take lessons and learn to draw and paint. Now it consumes much of my free time. Painting like the masters I admire (Sorolla, Hopper, Homer, Sargent) has become a personal challenge.

My painting is fundamentally representational.  I am striving to be bolder and looser, showing more brushwork in each painting. I search for images that have rich colors, depth and interesting composition.  Subject complexity doesn't deter me; it is just another problem to solve that helps develops my skill.

Now painting is a passion. I attribute success to good coaching and diligent practice. I am pleased to have had my pieces selected in juried shows at the Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen, the Weinstein JCC, the Crossroads Gallery and For Art’s Sake
