I think that I might have painted every outdoor market running along 9th Avenue from 34th Street to 56th Street in Manhattan. Many are gone and the ones that remain have changed so much over the years. I began painting the markets and various scenes throughout Manhattan since 1978. I have never once been at a loss for subject matter and the experience has never ceased to amaze me. The constant flux that takes place is incredible. For my eye, the light that falls upon the concrete, steel and blacktop is sublime. A new and unexpected surprise is just around the corner. Shafts of light raking across  buildings and storefronts appear as if by magic. The shadows also play an important role in my work. I love the subtle transitions that take place as a brilliant light dissolves into a mysterious shadow and continues to reflect itself within the darkness.

Have you ever been to New Orleans?  I thought that this was a picture of one of the markets there.  You would have a lot of markets, churches, jazz bands, etc. to paint. It rains a lot down here, and in the late afternoon after a summer shower, the buildings reflect beautifully on the wet streets. I love your work. I felt right at home when my eyes feasted upon your painting!

Another great one.  I wish I could have seen NYC during this time.  So much character.  Great job!
