This is a 16 x 20 pastel on "pastelbord" portrait of a gentleman in Dallas, Tx.  I am always left smiling after looking at this one!

Not being a portrait artist, I wonder why the two lower corners are a vignette, and the top is not?  I do like the painting.

I find that a vignette is a flexible thing - and if all four corners are done to the same level, there is a boring symetry to the piece.  Basically I just work outwards until I like the "feel".  Also, being a larger gentleman, the lack of detail at the bottom helps with the balance.  I invite all comments though - fire away :)

It was not a negative criticism, just a question, and your answer satisfied me.  It is a very wonderful painting.

I did not take it as negative - just an opportunity to describe the process. I appreciate all comments as that is how we move forward.  I thank you for looking at art to such a level that you come up with these questions - that is great !!!!  You were certainly not negative - I did not take it that way. Keep looking, as I will, Sarah

wonderful painting & the use of the vignette to balance the gentleman's girth was brilliant! It keeps the focus on the face.

Looks like you captured this gentleman's jovial personality.  Very nice.

P.S.  Even his tie is very cheerful.
