Awe of a Child

This is my first oil painting. I'm not sure that I am ever going to manage to capture a "loose" painting in oils. I still have a few things that I am not happy with and am already thinking of making some changes to it (like the color of the shirt). But, for better or worse, here it is. My apologies to everyone for the quality of the picture, but my husband and brother changed the setting on my scanner and I am at a loss as to how to change it back from tiff to jpeg. Perhaps I can replace this photo when I get the knack of changing the scanner back to jpeg.

I never seem to be able to quit trying to fix things. I went back and scanned this. I think this copy came out a little better, but the mapping marks that I made show up in this. One thing I learned on this one was not to use dark sketch lines on a portrait.

I signed in because of this image. You have really captued something here. A beautifully executed piece. Don't worry about being loose, just keep going in this direction, and all will fall into place.!

You did a wonderful job on the giving a feeling for the total 3-D mass of the head, also on the skin tones, the features, the hair!  The *only* minor remark I have is that I'm wondering if the dark background may be too heavy for such a delicate portrait, but I'm not even sure about that.  Keep going!

Excellent first oil painting.  I wouldn't worry about the looseness right now either.  Regardless of you style, you still need a good foundation and that you have done very well.  Sweet expression, nice skin tones.  I also like the way you have painted the child's hair-looks very natural.   As Kisu suggested about the background, you might want to use a canvas pad to try some softer background tones and put it up next to the child's face to see what it might look like.  Just like anything else each painting builds with the next one.  I've never painted anything I didn't learn from, but this is BEAUTIFUL.

Skylar, Kisu, and Dania, thank you all so much for your encouragement. Now I am trying to figure out where I am going to put my signature. I guess it is going to somehow have to go into the hair.

Thank you, Gene, this is my first oil painting. I usually do watercolor. It was a lot of fun. Oils are very different, but I love them both.

Muna, thank you so much. Oils are quite an adventure, but I love them. That is probably the best part about art is that no matter what medium you use, it is a great adventure.

The girl done well!  Honestly, Margo, this is lovely. Such a great pose. Personally, I think the darker background compliments the pale skin tones. Who says oils have to be loose anyway?

Elayne, thank you so much for you kind comment. This was my first oil painting, other than paint by numbers as a teenager. I am truly falling in love with oil painting even though watercolor has been my first love. I don't think that I will ever quit using either.

My goodness , very well done. I understand the feeling of wanting to keep fixing a painting. I think it might be an artist's curse or something. This is beautiful! the child's focus is clearly captured.
