Here's the image of the artwork that I did progress report on :) I actually took the image with a better camera this time. Now you can see the right colors.
Historic Cape, 2010, watercolor on strathmore, 13x19
Terrific angle, and your technique is superb!
This painting is really well done, especially for a water color. You have completely pulled off the illusion and your window reflections are amazing. The brick work is convincing and overall it has a very Hopper-esque feel to it. But, as a painter of architecture myself, I have to comment on the lines. Was this from a photograph? The column to the left is straight up and down, but to the right they tilt to the right at their bottoms. Photoshop has a function that you can use to undo the lens distortion. I can give you some tips if you want. (I do this for a living for architects.)
Whoa! It's not easy to handle that much brickwork, as well as all that glass. And in watercolor yet! I especially like the balance of the warm brick color against all the smaller cool areas. Well done.
Thank you Jay, dman508, and Edna! I really appreciate your comments and tips! :)
Dman508, I would like to hear some tips on how to do the things you are talking about on photoshop (mine is Photoshop 7). My images are terrible, because they are taken with point and shoot camera. But I just got my new Canon Rebel XSi in few days ago, and WOW, what a difference. But still, I do need tips.
Thank you all!
You're going to love the Canon Rebel. I've heard great things about it.
In Photoshop you can select the whole image and go to Edit/Transform and choose Skew. Use the corners to adjust the angles and make your vertical lines form right angles to the top and bottom of the image and in this case the horizontal lines would converge to the vanishing point to the right. Play around with it and see how it works. There's also a perspective choice and under Filter there's a Vanishing Point tool that I haven't fooled around with. Skew works well enough.
I took the liberty of adjusting your image to show how it can look. Some of the lines were inconsistent so the results aren't perfect. Notice how much more calming the image is. It's more like being there.
Your skills are really amazing and I look forward to seeing more of your work.
Thanks for being open to criticism. I know people can be really sensitive but my intentions are good.
i guess you can't add an image to a comment. Let me know if you want it emailed.
Hey dman,
that would be awesome if you could e-mail me the image. yevgeny_asu@yahoo.com
Thanks!
