Now a question for all looking at this... Should I have put in some background of some sort?
Honesly , I would not change a thing! It looks great , it has beautiful line quality presence, it has wide range of gray scales presented. It's fine the way it is.
I agree with Kostadin; moreover, the lighting on her face, the shadows on her dress, and her squint are more than enough to imply the background, so why put in things you don't need? I think it works well the way it is.
