Oil on Canvas Technique: This is the second in a series of paintings for the family. This is my precious little Naveed, my Nephew Aaron's first born. As this has to be seen by said family, I have sweated bullets getting every nuance correct! This IS NOT Photo Manipulation.

Very, very nice.

Thank you Sharon. I'm learning Volumes about a child's skin tones. - very easy to mess up!

Thanks Helen.

Thanks so much. I think I just stepped up my game. Painting for the family is nerve-racking! They're all opinionated, and none too afraid to state what they think. Most of my work get "That's nice", or less. :-)

You are a very talented artist.  Wonderful work

on 15 Nov 2009 4:27 PM

Thanks, Jan, I really appreciate that from you!

Skylar, I just found this ... it is magical!!  I love it! The expression is so innocent and those eyes .... wow!  Super job. How many more nieces do you have?  Lots I hope!

Sarah said it all. Love the expression you have captured.

Sarah - I sorta snuck this one in today. I finished it sooner than I thought I would. I am quite pleased with it. The good thing about having a Crash Course in Portrature is that each one is easier than the one before. I am still working on little Cora's picture - will probably finish it tomorrow. After that, I have a Nephew, and, unless someone else comes out of the woodwork, that should do it (Except for the one of Marilyn, which she doesn't know about)

on 15 Nov 2009 7:15 PM

Gene - Thanks for commenting. This wasn't as much of a chore as I thought it was going to be!

Skylar,
I agree with you - it is not easy to paint for the family, but you have a good strategy: to show the portrait, when is already done, and this one is a winner - your niece is calm and adorable, it looks like she has a tender heart. We like it, now - good luck with the family! ...I have to paint my three grandchildren too - Christmas is coming.

on 15 Nov 2009 8:40 PM

Valia - You know exactly what I am going through. I once said I would Never do Artwork for Christmas, much less Portraits, But here I am doing it! Good Luck with yours!

Skylar, glad you are fast at painting portraits. That is a lot of pressure to put yourself under (doing it as Christmas presents). That's why I do them as a surprise for the family -- no pressure to get it done (other than what I put on myself). This is really nice. I love the highlight on her nose. It is the perfect finish to a lovely portrait.

on 15 Nov 2009 9:40 PM

Thank you so much, Margo. Trust me, this will probably never be repeated! I thought this year I might save a little money by making gifts - Some ideas are better when kept as ideas only !

on 15 Nov 2009 10:20 PM

Oh, I have done portraits for the family too - let's just say "win some, lose some" - it all depends on how that person sees themselves vs how I see them.   Dangerous ground, but mostly good.

on 15 Nov 2009 10:25 PM

Sarah - As I told you, I did enter into this with trepidations. But - Look at it this way - They can't do any better than me for the price!

You did a fantastic job with this one!!  The skin tones are beautiful and natural. Children are particularly difficult but this one is successful. I'm sure they treasure this masterpiece work.

on 16 Nov 2009 7:04 AM

Thanks, Michael. The family hasn't seen this one yet. I E_M'ed an image to my sister, to get her reaction, but haven't gotten word back yet. (I feel confident she will approve.)

Wonderful job on this one I love the light expression and the skin tones, you must have had a smile on your face painting it even with all the pressure. of trying to get it "right". It sure is a joy to look at.

on 16 Nov 2009 9:02 AM

Muna wadie - Thank You! Yes, I smiled all the way through this one. She is a joy.

Oh my, she is precious!  What a wonderful job!

on 16 Nov 2009 3:41 PM

Thanks, Elayne. My sister just critiqued the piece I'm working on - Apparently I have the Hair Wrong! LOL

on 16 Nov 2009 3:59 PM

You should enter this lovely painting in a competition, I'm sure it would do very well and it would generate a lot of commission work for you if that is something you do.

on 16 Nov 2009 4:07 PM

Thanks, LiliAnne - Tho it might place well, I do not enter competitions. I have collectors of my work, and I occasionally sell thru diff galleries, but for the most part, I don't pursue any marketing.

I don't know if I'm too late in replying on this but I'll try anyway.  This is fantastic and I know exactly what you are going through with painting family.  I'm new to this site and just started painting portraits in oil.  I'm working on two right now and I can tell you that you have an amazing painting here.  I've looked through your other works and you are an incredible artist and so versatile.  Do you use glazes?

on 14 Dec 2009 12:10 PM

JCee - Just found this. Thanks so much. Yes, I use glazes, However, this piece is completely Digital from scratch. In the last year, I have been transitioning to digital. Since about 3 months ago, everything I have painted has been digital. I use ArtRage Software with a Waucom Digital Drawing Pad.
