Carlson is a master at composition. His book on landscape painting is one of the best reads out there. I avoided reading it for years because the pictures were in black and white, but once I got started, I learned a ton.

This is a gorgeous painting!

When I saw the thumbnail of this painting it got me very excited to see who this landscape virtuoso was. I am grateful to Allison for posting this wonderful snow scene by Carlson. Fortunately, a few years age, I was able to see a collection of his work at Jim's Antiques in Lambertville, NJ. I was floored. He had this amazing ability of painting with tons of color (which you could see up close) but making it read unified. There is no boredom here, his paintings are intensely captivating. I agree with Lori about his book, it should be on every artists reading list... after viewing this painting, I think I need to reread it.
