Charcoal medium, HB pencil, and a pencil called Stabilo CarbOthello 1400/635. on sketch smooth sketch paper 12x18 inch. I'm just learning about charcoal and pencils. The Stabilo is a brownish color pencil that isn't pastel yet isn't graphite. I'm not even sure where it came from. All I can say is I'm in love with the range of shades a person can possibly achieve with these drawing tools. Simply endless possiblities.

Interesting.  I have not worked very much with charcoal.. I was at a demo yesterday at a Jerry"s art store where the artist did a charcoal portrait and it was very effective.   She talked about useing light, med and dark tones.  The only other medium she used was a black pastel for very dark and a white for highlights.

I'm still in the process of learning about the tools and how to keep the paper clean from smudges. I really like doing this type of work and have every plan this year of learning and doing more charcoal and pencil work.  It's visually quiet and that is one of my favorite images to see.

i use black and white charcoal with my pastels all the time. ismudge all the time because im left handed. you have a great eye you will do well.
