Takoda in Sunshine

This is my first pastel painting & I had a REALLY hard time with the medium - I had it pretty good & then decided to spray it with fixative that said it was for pastels, but it flattened & darkened it - UGH!  So I went over some it again, but it wouldn't take too much more pastel as it didn't have much tooth left....

I used Pitt Pastels on Mi-Teintes paper - 12x16

This is my daughter's dog Takoda that she got from a rescue called Another Chance Ranch - we thought we were getting an Australian Sheppard mix - but got so much more - he is a fantastic companion.

C & C 's appreciated

I love the face on this dog.  I have used fixative on my graphite drawings and also had them turn dark.  I think most of them will turn a work darker.  Maybe some one knows of a brand that will not do that.

Beautiful job!  I do not spray my pastel work at all for that reason.  If you are heavy handed like me you could try Wallis paper.  A great big tooth.  I can't believe this is your first pastel.  I'm impressed. :)

puedo sentirlo caminando hacia mi!!

I don´t use fixatives precisely for that reason. For preserving the paintings what works for me is wrapping it in paper (I use what in Guatemala we call papel mantequilla which a thin paper used by architects)

You can try the sennelier la carte paper which has way lot more tooth it is expensive but well worth it

I am blown away that this is your "first" pastel painting.  Just wonderful!!  I love the fact that you caught this special dog on the move.  Love it!

I too tried a workable fixative on one of my pastel disasters and it started looking like a watercolor painting.  I have used Mod Podge clear acriylic sealer on my charcoal that seems to have worked really well but it is not workable.  I came across this stuff when searching in the art department at Walmart.  I needed something quik so took a chance.  I haven't tried it on pastel.

Again, love you painting.

Very nice!  I love art work of animals. Very nice movment on the dog. Also had the sameexperience with a fixative. Even when you are very light handed it sharpens the edges and darkens the overall picture.

I have no insights to offer

on pastels, I have none.

You drew it for your daughter?

I like to say "Well done!"

Dogs are lovable creatures,

I know cos I have three.

I look at Takoda's features,

She's found her sanctuary.
