Judge's Comments: Why is it that when someone handles a painting this well it looks so easy. There is so much knowledge in this painting. I haven’t seen a tougher position to paint fingers since I looked at a Nicolai Fechin. Great paintings are about contrast. This is a good example: Bold and refined brushwork, large dark shapes and small light shapes, and complimentary colors. Excellent understanding of light built upon great anatomy. - John Burton
