From the artist: I see a parade of ships from my studio window at Pier 70. Like large, languid still lifes on the bay, they call to me. In the morning they are inky, ghostly, glimmering things, by afternoon becoming luminous and magnificent. Too far away to make out the details, I see them as swaths of color sitting on an ever-changing liquid surface. Just as I fall in love with a particular ship, it vanishes when my back is turned. Where do they go, where have they been?

Artist bio: Suzy Barnard was born in England, earned her BFA (Painting) in 1980 from Bristol Polytechnic and moved to the Bay Area in 1981. She graduated from the MFA Painting program at the San Francisco Art Institute in 1984. Barnard paints from her studio at Pier 70 in San Francisco, and commutes home to Berkeley over the Bay Bridge, where more ships and weather are waiting to be noticed.

From the artist: I am from Atanta, Georgia, and am currently pursuing my B.F.A in drawing and painting at Georgia State University. Ultimately my plan is to pursue a career within commercial illustration and the fine arts. I mostly create figurative work with graphite and watercolor. However sculpture provides a way for me break away and get my hands dirty with clay. For me, the most interesting aspect of sculpture is the wide variety of different materials it employs. Sculpture is a way to investigate the materials which make up our world.

From the artist: I work in clay and cast in bronze using the lost wax method. This piece is part of a series depicting strong women caught in a character defining moment. I create in any medium, but my current favorite is clay. I like to make art that draws people in with the overall beauty, then captivates them with detail when they come in for a closer look.

Multiple laminations of Suma plywood sculpted with angle grinder, Dremel tools, files, and hand sanding, and finished with gloss floor wax.

Artist bio: Ray Garrett retired to St. Simons Island, Georgia, where he has pursued his desire to experiment with fine art. He began sculpting--using plywood as the primary medium because of its texture and unique lines. He eventually moved onto clay, portrait heads, animals and birds. Next was metal after a short course in welding and then onto paper mache. Easily bored and curious to experiment Ray move onto painting and is now working to combine sculpture into paintings, thus weaving a great deal of engineering into his art.

From the artist: I am 21 years old and from Virginia. I studied at the Angel Academy for two years, becoming an assistant teacher there. I am currently studying at the Florence Academy of Art, going into my second year. I am extremely interested in everything to do with painting, including anatomy, perspective, physics, philosophy, sculpture, and drawing, etc. I am eager to learn all that I can. While I do attend art academies, I mainly look to the masters of the 15th to 17th centuries, such as Rubens and Ribera, for answers and inspiration.

Artist bio: Chelsey Tyler Wood received her B.F.A. from Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design and her M.F.A. from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. She participated in exhibitions including Boston Young Contemporaries and The Next Generation III in Boston. Awards received include the Dana Pond Award, Boit Award, Springborn Fellowship, and Montague Travel Grant. She is currently a nominee for the Blanch E. Coleman award and will be a resident at the Contemporary Art Center in New York in the fall of 2011. Her work has been published in Preview magazine and Big Red & Shiny. Chelsea is currently a post-graduate teaching fellow at the Museum of Fine Art, Boston. She continues to work and live in the Boston area.

Artist bio: Naruki Kukita was born in Japan and currently lives in New York City. From the artist: I started painting two years ago when I retired. I am self-taught and would describe myself as a contemporary realist. I work exclusively in oil. I have always felt that the artist's job was to show the viewer how to find beauty in the not so obvious. Anyone can find beauty in a sunset or fall foliage, but it's the artist who sees beauty in the decaying landscape of a New England March, or a rusted and discarded object. I found the objects in my painting 4B at a local flea market for a few dollars and developed the composition in my studio after playing around with them. I think in their new configuration they are quite beautiful. I hope that I have done my job as an artist.

Artist bio: Sarah Fowler is a senior in the BFA program at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD), majoring in drawing/painting with a strong interest in printmaking.

From the artist: The majority of my current studio work is based on an intuitive contour line drawing method combined with a monoprinting technique. It involves the layering of organic shape and line, along with color and/or value. My intention is to create abstracted or semi-abstracted forms that possess chaotic or energetic movement, with an ambiguous potential for growth and transformation or change. This creates a tension within the work reflecting my environment, the highly stimulating world of everyday life.

To focus on these concerns within my work I use a process of layering that preserves the history of my mark making, giving a transparent, yet dense feel to the finished product. These qualities are important because they create a sense of mystery, ominous or unfamiliar territory, and suggest a collection of information over time, adding to the chaos and tension. They also directly relate to where I am now as a student and artist, in a constant state of flux.

From the artist: In this painting, I tried to convey the paradoxical journey of the art student, at once illumination and daunting. He sits in a moment of contemplation, surrounded by his tools and studies before returning to the easel.

Artist bio: Daniel Bilmes is an emerging artist in the classicist figurative genre, whose paintings are noted for their elegance, refinement, and serene humanism. He was born in 1989 in Ashland, Oregon, the second of four children. His work aims to capture the character of his subject in the most sensitive and truthful way possible. He achieves this by digging ever deeper into the human experience, looking for hidden insights and bringing them into significance and onto the canvas. In addition to numerous and varied ongoing projects, Daniel teaches at Atelier Maui.
