What is silverpoint drawing?
Also known as metalpoint, silverpoint is an ancient technique in which silver wire is applied to paper with a stylus in the same manner as a pencil. The gauge of wire used is somewhat determined by an artist’s preference. The drawing technique creates fine, metallic lines, but as the silver tarnishes over time, they fade to gray.
Silverpoint drawing technique
Silverpoint must be applied to a smooth, prepared surface that will react with the metal: most artists choose a surface coated with traditional gesso, casein or gouache, as all of these substances will react well. Metalpoint art can never be erased, so it is a good way to develop discipline in drawing.
