  • removing varnish from oil painting

    I have a few oil paintings, spray varnished, that I want to redo-improve. Is this possible? Can I oil paint over varnish? I have learned a valuable lesson-not varnishing until I have viewed the painting for weeks! Mistakes are not readily seen--for me, anyway! Thanks for any suggestions!

    Wmmccoy, thank you for answering. I have been really baffled by all the different ingredients that I see. Hopefully, Ralph Mayer's book The Artist's Handbook of Materials and Techniques will be exactly what I am looking for. I have found information calling Copal oil a medium and later found...

    I have read everything I can get my hands on about oil painting and still have questions in my mind. Everyone keeps say fat over lean. Some people say don't add any medium to the first layer, some say add turpentine (thinner). I am assuming that what is being discussed here is not really the thickness...
