  • Preparing an oil painting for varnish

I just finished a piece with quite a bit of rough impasto passages and was looking for advice on how best to clean the surface before varnishing. Also, is it easier to spray on the varnish or brush it on. Thanks, Dastu

  • Re: Gouache on canvas

Lori, no, I just found out about it. The things that look interesting to me are that it is clear, for watercolor, and it supposedly enhances the colors. I was a little concerned about whether regular varnish might yellow or change the original colors in an unpleasant way.

Sharon, have you or Lori ever heard of Demco clear drying varnish for watercolors that supposedly enhances the colors? Nasco sells it.

  • Re: Gouache on canvas

Wow, Sharon, that really seems to change the colors a lot. The painting I did on the Fredix canvas wasn't affected by varnishing. I guess you have to decide what kind of finished effect you want. I think Birgit O'Connor teaches how to apply 300 lb paper to clay board, but she didn't teach...

  • Re: Gouache on canvas

Hi Margo, actually I was referring to varnishing watercolors on paper not Fredrix canvas. Sorry I didn't make myself clear. I was referring to a technique suggested by Lori Woodward that I have tried on some of my watercolors. I love them. Lori posted "Most of my watercolors are purly transparent...

  • Art Technical Q&A: Cleaning an oil painting

Should I clean my oil paintings before applying varnish? If so, how? To prepare a painting for varnishing after it is thoroughly dry, it is important to remove any dust or dirt that may have accumulated on the surface. Begin with a clean, soft, dry cloth and gently wipe the entire surface. If necessary...

  • Art Technical Q&A: Removing varnish

How do you remove varnish from a finished oil painting to redo an area that you are not satisfied with? Of the two main types of varnishes, solution varnish and cooked-oil varnish, theoretically a solution varnish (a resin dissolved in its solvent) is supposed to be reversible with the original solvent...

  • Art Technical Q&A: Extending acrylics

Extending the Drying Time of Acrylic Paint Can you suggest products and techniques to extend the blending time of acrylic? I have tried a number of mediums, but they add gloss to my painting and are overly viscous. Moderation is the key to using mediums that extend the drying time of acrylic paint. One...

  • Art Technical Q&A: Protecting a Mural

I am doing a trompe l’oeil mural that will be displayed in an area where children can touch it. Do you have any recommendations for the types of paint and protective coatings I should use? I am concerned with both durability and green issues. Two coats of varnish will ensure the durability of a...

  • Art Technical Q&A: Protecting Prints

Q: I am a printmaker who recently created a large work consisting of eight prints, which I mounted onto separate canvases primed with soft-ground acrylic. Can I use an acrylic medium or varnish to protect the prints if they contain oil-based printing ink? A: This is an interesting dilemma. Since you...
