  • First EVER Oil Painting

I started doing some drawing and sketching 2 years ago, I never realized I had any artistic ability before but when I tried I loved it and my passion for art began. My grandma is an amazing artist, she mainly uses oils, so this year I spent two weeks with her and she taught me the basics of oil painting...

  • Renaissance Painting Techniques for Contemporary Artists

The "ATELIER NEO MEDICI" believes that in order to create constant Art, i.e., Art which transcends the fashionable, it is necessary for the artist to have had a comprehensive background in traditional old master painting techniques. The quality of a painting can be assessed in terms of it's...

  • Re: under painting

I believe the important thing to remember is that there are no rules in art except those of not mixing non-compatible substances. Don't want any undesirable chemical reactions. Perhaps you could try a few small, simple pieces with a few different under colors and determine what you like best for...

  • Re: Achieving transparent washes in oil

David, I think he drags dry paint over an lighter tone transparent underpainting leaving a lot of the underpainting showing through. It is hard to see this kind of detail in the small images on his website. His work has a beautiful soft tonal quality. Happy you posted his name.

It's a pleasure to share the information with you- I have learned so much through these forums, things that I really should have been taught in art school. Professors of fine arts- hear this and please teach your students all of the technical tips, tricks and techniques that you can think of!

  • Re: Problems varnishing oil paintings

Hi Kadon, There is a very important difference between retouching and finishing varnish: Retouching varnish is used on touch-dry, or recently-dry oil paintings that haven't dried completely through yet. You might need to varnish a painting before it has completely dried, say when you have an exhibition...

  • Re: Problems varnishing oil paintings

Hi everyone, I've finished varnishing the paintings and they are now hanging in the gallery. If anyone is interested, the gallery's site is www.elm75.de (in German only) and the images are on my own site www.sarahdudley.net, along with photos from the vernissage. About the varnish- the onion...

  • Re: Is there anything I can do to make the oil dry faster?

There are several things you can do. As mentioned, you can replace your regular oil titanium white for a tube of alkyd white. It dries more quickly and, since you mix white with most colors, you will speed the drying time. You can also buy a bottle of cobalt drier. You will find it where you find oil...

  • Re: Problems varnishing oil paintings

I've had this problem with two different paintings, one was finished a year before varnishing (thick paint- needed long drying time) and the other was drying for about 6 months. The paint didn't lift, rather the varnish was 'rejected' on just a few areas, and that within an area of the...

  • Re: Problems varnishing oil paintings

This is a really interesting response- can you list some of the reasons the top layer of my painting might not have enough bonding strength? What kind of resin do you mean for use in the medium (I assume that means either the linseed/poppy oil or a prepared medium). Also, what do you do with the onion...
