    My instructor has recommended preparing a sanded surface myself when I complained of the difficulty of finding sanded pastel papers, but he is primarily an oil painter, and offered no instructions. What paper/board, what substance should I use to get the sanded texture?

    Hi Jeannette, I hope you'll forgive me for jumping in. Here is my humble opinion on the subject .... I had the best luck with Rembrandt brand soft pastels for my first ones. I recommend getting more than 12, as many as you can afford, a set of 90 half sticks- general selection (not portrait or landscape...
