I will be demonstrating scratchboard techniques to my local artist group next week, so I needed to do a sample piece to show them. I had taken a close up pic of a great horned owl at our local zoo so I used him for my subject and decided to do just a black and white with one color accent - the eyes. I used Ampersand Clayboard black and Clayboard yellow ink for the eyes - I have only done scratchboard using paper prior to this one, but I can tell you that the Clayboard black carves very smoothly and is very fun to work with! Give it a try!

Excellent, great dynamic close-up.  I've never tried scratchboard before so thanks for the info. Might give it a try.

Thanks ladies! Glad that you liked my little owl. I wish you could both come see my demo, but there are excellent websites and a few books on the how-to - just search the web for scratchboard and lots of sites are available. All it requires material wise is clayboard black, scratching tool and clayboard inks. Then you draw or trace your art onto the board and start scratching away. It requires strong hands and lots of patience! I find it very relaxing and a nice break from painting and drawing.

Thanks Robin! He was very fun to do, and since I did the demo for my local art group, they have asked if I could teach a class in scratchboard so I am looking forward to that. My husband especially liked my owl - I have a hard time selling some pieces because he gets attached to them - I joked with him the other day that I would have to start producing pieces of subjects he doesn’t like!

I entered the owl “Watcher” in my local art societie’s show “Black and White and one color” and he placed first!! I have placed first in the last three shows there, and my husband is teasing me that he will have to get me a bigger hat - I told him how about a bigger studio - LOL!Smile The shows are fun and a good experience for me since I have not shown work since college days. I know that I have a LOT to learn, and my local art society is a great group of folks with amazing talent!

Thank you very much for the nice comments Jerry - I really appreciate it. I just finished a two hour workshop where I taught some folks how to do scratchboard - I am looking forward to seeing their projects when they are done. Have you tried it? I use Ampersand Clayboard and there are some excellent tutorials out there on the subject - nice break from working in pastels and colored pencil (two of my main interests).
