Hello,
I critiqued your Nefertiti piece. Just looked at this one and the Madonna piece. You are at a point were any critiquing gets rough. This is because you are above the curve! Your next step up would put you into a high level of skill. You are at the stage where things get gut wrenching. You have to be as objective with yourself as possible.
On this piece - the hair is done really well. The beard is not reading as well - not as subtly done. There is an underlying structural deficiency (the forming of his head). I have to be careful here - because part of it is your natural inclination. I do not have the time to really go over this now, so I will say this: Look at how subtle you rendered the hair. By comparison the facial features and structure are not up to the same level. I already mentioned the beard. Finally the shirt and jacket get very stiff. On the facial structure - key hint: form lighting. It is a three quarter portrait. The side closest to the viewer must "pop" more then the side receding. What will also help you is more understanding of underlying bone and muscle structure. You have an excellent knack for getting key features that make a person look they way they do - add better structural foundation - bang!
Again - I am being ruthless because of your skill level is high.
I'm not going to lie, I was worried before I even saw the image. This was such a pleasant surprise. good job. It truly resembles Robert Downy Jr. I feel like you focused more on the likeness and as you worked more on the suit and tie you got by with the minimum amount of detail you could. I too can fall prey to this because sometimes I just want to finish it and get it over with.
There is something about the nose...Im not sure if it's the slightest bit too thin or too short or both...honestly that's just me being extremely picky. I really like this drawing. great job
