I starting using Acrylics about a year and half ago and when I start to detail out my work in Gouache it reacts as if there is a oil film on the painting but not in all cases "Most". I'll airbrush a Fluid Matte Finish over the painting and it helps to correct the problem sometimes. I'm using Golden Fluid acrylics for my base and all brush work is done with Golden Opens. Get increditible detailing with the gouache anyone out in Artist Daily land know of a fix for this. I'm a past oil user and not that new to Acyrlics is this normal? Any help to correct it would be helpful.

This isn't a very technical answer, but acrylics dry fast and leave a plastic-like film that repels any watercolor. The fact that gouache is so opaque gives the possibility of covering some acrylic, sometimes, but you could probably almost wipe it back off with your hand (because of the plastic-like acrylic film underneath). You can use your acrylic paint like you would a frisket (only the area would be painted in rather than blank) and paint the uncovered areas with gouache to get a mixed media painting.

What kind of surface are you working on?
You are probably aware that a heavy layer of acylics will seal the the surface of illustration board or watercolor paper.

Hello Paul,
Jessoed masonite and illustration board. I paint the base work with acrylics and then all my fine detail work with gouache just my preference.Only getting the oily effect after the paintings have dried for a period of time, been airbrushing a matte medium over the painting to get that to not be so bad. Don't know if you've seen my work just get better results from the gouache. The work around is ok just didn't know if others has had this happen and there be a better solution. No biggie.
