The goals of this forum are to have fun, keep ourselves painting and meeting artistic challenges on a regular basis, and come together and encourage each other to do the same!

The All Media Photo Challenge is open to everyone—in any medium or style, with no regard to experience level or newness to painting or drawing. In fact, if you've never painted before, this is the perfect place for you to pick up a pencil or brush, and give it a try! If you are an experienced painter or draftsman, please join in and help us learn from your experience.

The structure of the photo challenge forum is simple. Every two to three weeks, a new photo challenge will be posted—if you have ideas, shout them out—with a target completion date. That target date is just a suggestion. If you miss a target date, that's always OK--post your work whenever it is ready. This is a light and stress-free way to learn and grow in our art. I've been experimenting with painting anything/everything. I've been gathering a lot of interesting things inside before winter to use to actually set up a still life. I'm trying to get a good understanding of shading, value and composition so maybe it's time I give it a whirl. I had fun with Vincent's bedroom lol.

Re: Challenge 23 - September 2011

Hi Catherine,

Wow! several at once! My favorites are the bowl with apples, sunflowers on black, and Van Gogh's high-traffic bedroom (everyone seems to recognize it!). With the other still life (and I noticed the great spiral) I'd love to see you do another still life like that but with more of the elements touching each other.

Re: Challenge 23 - September 2011

I instantly recognized Van Gogh's bedroom not that I spent any time with him there!!!

Very nice greenery. I like the layered rocks on the two sides of the water fall but am a little confused with the top ones. Personally, I always try not to make round or curve rocks. They can be triangular or oblong or any shape that go straight or cut sharp at the corners, etc. but not round except if they are small rocks or gravels. Naturally, there are many rocks that are round or dome shapes but when in paintings they do not transport the hard surface or strength of the rock too well. This is a tip from my on- line teacher who was teaching thousands of students all over the world who signed up for his classes. His name is Johannes Vloosthuis. Otherwise this is a nice painting of a waterfall.

Re: Challenge 23 - September 2011

Lore- I love all three of your paintings/drawings. The Horses are well done with good values. They look real. The apples are floating nicely in the bowl. They look real too with variation in colors. The Bird has beautiful BG colors but I like to see more detailed work on the feathers, also values change will help it not to look flat. Anyhow good jobs so far. Keep going.

Re: Challenge 23 - September 2011

I missed all these good stuffs just see these today since it is at the top line of the AMPC page.

Holly, thanks for being so nice to leave good words. I went to look at the original painting and did not see any blue specs and it's hard to say what they are. The BG was done with red and black so I don't think it can turn into blue. I changed my mind from blue to darker BG before I started doing it.But thanks all the same.

Re: Challenge 23 - September 2011

Catherine, you are working miracles with those watercolors. It's always amazing that we can turn a blank sheet of paper into a 3D image. I meant to comment on the leaves in the three sunflower painting. They are very well done.

Re: Challenge 23 - September 2011

C.
I do like sunflowers/daisys too but I like them a little beat up and wilty for some reason. Maybe it's the color. The yellow in the ones I painted here were tough to keep the light and yet add value without losing the strong yellow. I liked doing the leaf work better as I'm not much of a flower painter yet. I'm actually working on a little orchid watercolor off and on today and that little tiny orchid flower is making me crazy. They will stay blooming for around a month so I still have a chance to get it right. lol

Yes, the light had to be coming from somewhere and a starry night was the only answer lol.

I know Sam, the pumpkins were all over the place and the gourd is some sort of mutant giant too. I just kind of went with this to see where it would go. I'm not real good at layering objects but would like to attempt the gourd and pumpkins again. My still life skills are real limited at the moment. LOL yeah, I haven't been spending time in Vincent's quarters either! I like the colors of the apples too but I thought it was a little rough and dirty looking. I did these all on sketch paper and the half slice of apple actually has a hole in the paper there as I thought I could perform a miracle or something.
