No black for the shadows. i don't even own a tube of black paint. I mix shadow colors depending on the surrounding area...sometimes with complimentary colors from what I am using in the light areas. I do tend to use blues mixed with burnt sienna and some other colors.

I don't have anything new to add, but certainly second Sharon's remarks. You have a great start. Shouldn't take much more to finish. Good job.

Thank you for the warm reception and nice comments. By "S" shape are you referring to the composition? I am not familiar with that term. I should have an update or maybe even the final posted tomorrow. Portraiture is so much harder than I ever imagined and working on a small canvas is more challenging than working on something larger. Every problem becomes magnified when in a small area.

I'm new here so I may be posting this in the wrong section. I'm working on my second portrait ever, (the first portrait, a self portrait ,18 x 24 oil on canvas, posted on a previous thread on this site), is of my brother and future sister-in-law to be given as a wedding present. I'm in the process of working on the shadows and lights of my brother's head but I need to wait for this layer to dry. C&C's welcome.
