Do you understand it? Insurance is one of the things that keeps many of us chained to jobs that keep us from "going for it" with our art. And many others just go without and hope for the best, especially the younger artists. Which is scary. I think we need SOMETHING, but is it what's on the table now?

I can't find a simplified explanation, with pros and cons, anywhere! I can read the 500 pages of the bills, but I don't even know what the current issues are in health care, problems, etc. and certainly can't analyze it and decide if I'm for it or not.

Some folks are SO SURE about yea or nay. How about you? (And if you can direct me to a dumbed down, but evenhanded explanation...please do!)

On the business side - What is the most important activity/task, as an artist, to do? and what struggles are there with that task?

Is it finding a gallery or dealer, generating and maintaining a buyers list... what do you guys think?

Welcome to the Artist Daily forums. We are glad you are here, as there is so much to do around the site. This is a comprehensive site including both editorial content and user generated content. The site has forums, blogs, galleries, video and more features coming. These conversational forums are a place for you to share your artwork for critique and instruction, as well as a place to gather tips on materials and technique or simply learn about a new medium all together. There is also a dedicated member gallery for sharing your work and commenting on others' work. Or, you might be interested in reading our editorial blogs. Soon we will be incorporating more instructional content, events and groups to join.

If you have questions or need some help, you can find a lot of answers in the Community Help Forum. The first six posts are stickies that have a lot of information on how to use the site.

"Community Volunteers and Staff Contacts" -- just in case you'd like to know who works on the site and how to contact us.

"How to post images in the Media Gallery" -- a reference guide to learning how to upload your images to our Galleries. Please note the File size: Right now the limit is 100 kb for an upload, but there isn't a program that resizes these images automatically. However, you should know that each member is allotted only 10 MB of space right now on the site.

"So, what is tagging?" -- Tags are important search and find keywords to mark your images and posts, you can understand and learn more about using this tool here. Tagging is one of the cooler features on the site, but getting used to it takes a little time. When you tag, make sure that you put commas between the words and use single words instead of groups. For ex: "oil painting landscape flower church" won't work as a tag. But, "oil, painting, landscape, flower, church" is perfect.

"How to post images in the forums" -- similar to posting in the Galleries, but a few different things to note.

"Using the Private Message System" -- this is a way to connect with another member privately

The community guidelines would be good to get familiar with, too. If you need to get the legalize side of things, check out the "Terms of Use", which is related to all the Interweave websites.

Acrylic paints are an art and commercial product that people put on different surfaces to add color or, in some cases, achieve a special effect. Essentially mixtures made with plastic and pigment, they are suitable for a variety of projects ranging from house painting to fine arts. Although their chemical properties can create problems, such as difficulty cleaning, many people like them for their positive qualities, such as their ability to resist water after drying. Experts are still examining how they hold up over time.

I'm very discouraged by the way my painting photos turn out. The colors are frequently washed out or distorted even though I don't use flash. Then, when I upload them and reduce them in size (100 kb max) they lose definition. I see other people's paintings which are sharp and clear, so it must be me. Any advice would be welcome.

natural or incandescent light?
shoot from a distance using zoom, or close up?
What settings, other than 'normal'?
How best to light the painting?

I am using an Olympus 8MP digital camera.

Concrete Pigment Colors

Hello Guys,

Black: According to Concrete Décor, black is commonly used alone or to darken other concrete pigments. Used alone, black can be used to make any shade of gray from very light to straight black. Black pigment is often used for driveways, roadways, runways and parking lots because it hides stains caused by oil. Concrete colored with black pigment absorbs heat and reduces the occurrence of ice. Black concrete pigment comes in two forms: iron oxide and carbon. The carbon form provides a darker black up to jet-black, while iron oxide black is more often used for shades of gray and to darken other colors. On the other hand, carbon colors will weather out over time much quicker than iron oxide pigments.

Liquid Pigment: Liquid pigments come in natural or synthetic forms that are measured by weight or volume, similar to the technique used to create paint colors. Liquid pigment is added to concrete during the mixing process. Natural forms limit color variations to earth tones while synthetic forms can be mixed to create almost any color, hue or shade. Many instances can cause color variations with liquid pigment coloring, such as different finishing and curing methods. According to the experts at Decosup, Inc, calcium chloride accelerators should not be used with liquid pigment due to uneven coloring results. They also recommend using water and aggregates that do not contain salts. Salts will cause a white powdering effect on the surface of the concrete, called efflorescence.

Granulated Pigment: Granulated pigments are generally used with a dry-to-wet metering system that provides a more cost effective way of creating liquid pigment. Concrete companies can buy granulated pigment and mix, on site, with water. With the dry-to-wet metering system the granulated pigment is mixed with water inside a preparation tank then dispensed directly into the concrete mixing truck. An article in The Concrete Producer claims the main advantage of granulated pigment is huge savings in shipping costs as granulated pigment weighs a great deal less than its liquid counterpart.

Chemistry of Oil Paints and Pigments

Hello Guys,

History of Oil Paint: Giorgio Vasari's "Lives of the Artists" refers to the invention of oil painting in Europe in the early 15th century. The book credits Jan van Eyck with inventing the technique in 1410. Many art historians argue that other artists used oil paint before van Eyck, though van Eyck may have developed the use of linseed oil as a binding medium.

Paint Components: Oil paints have three components: a pigment, a medium and a diluting agent. Painters combine the colored oil paints with a medium, such as linseed oil, poppy oil or stand oil to help the pigment bind to the canvas, along with a diluting agent, such as turpentine, mineral spirits or odorless paint thinner, to bring the paint to the desired consistency.

Chemical Components of Pigments: Many pigments contain sulfides, which are sulfur atoms attached to two carbon atoms. Most cadmium colors, ultramarine blue and vermilion contain sulfides. Many pigments also contain sulfates and sulfites, which are salts or esters. Sulfate and sulfite pigments include cerulean blue, manganese blue and thioindigo red.

Pigment Interactions: Chemicals in some pigments can interact and interfere with other pigments. For example, pigments with sulfur or sulfide salts can react with the lead in lead white and cause the lead white to darken. If you work with sulfide pigments, such as cadmium reds and yellows, pair them with titanium white or zinc white instead of lead white. If you must use lead white, pair it with pigments that contain sulfates or sulfites instead of sulfides. Such pigments include cerulean blue, manganese blue and thioindigoid red. Azo red and yellow work well as substitutes for cadmium colors.

Pigment and Medium Drying Times: Some specific oil paint pigments tend to dry more slowly than others. Titanium white, ivory black and cadmium yellow tend to dry particularly slowly. Different oil mediums also dry at different rates. Some painters might use a particular medium because it dries more or less slowly. Stand oil dries faster than linseed oil and linseed oil dries faster than poppy oil, for example.

Turn Lye Soap Purple

Hello Everybody,

While making lye soap is no easy task, coloring your lye soap is easier than you might think, even if you want to achieve a rich color like purple. You do need to choose between natural and artificial colors for your lye soap, and some colorants may require different handling. Shades of purple work especially well for lye soap fragranced with berry or grape scents, florals or classic lavender.

What is the function of Chlorophyll B as an accessory pigment?

I am just wondering if chlorophyll B is an accessory pigment and does not transfer the energy of light to the carbon fixation reactions of photosynthesis, what is its functions? And, I know it's different from carotenoids which protect the plants from high energy radiation.

Hello Guys,

I used to have severe acne as teenager, but thankfully my skin is clear now with exception of few really minor pimples. However, my acne has left my whole face spotted I have glaring red pigment stains everywhere I used to have zits. They are really noticeable because I am very fair-skinned, and it almost looks like I have a massive breakout. Is there any way to get rid of these red dots without laser surgery?

time management for more art time

I've been thinking - How can I maximize having more time to do art? I realize retirement is a good 17 years away and considering the age has been upped, I think it will now be twenty years away. A lot can happen between now and then and I really would like to pursue my own art on my own terms (unlike my design job) right now. The lottery is not coming in, so I figure I need to come up with creative solutions.

I've started to paint again on weekends, but it's not enough. There are still other things to do. I'm thinking maybe I need to start doing art the first thing for an hour when I wake up in the morning... Maybe sketches... I just can't imagine dealing with oil paints that early. Perhaps someone has a set-up that requires no clean-up. I figure, I have enough energy to type a comment here or search the internet, so maybe I do still have enough energy to use on painting an hour.

If you are not retired, working full-time, what have you done to maximize your time and keep your energy up? What do you do when you come home, cook, eat, clean, get ready for bed and do the same darned routine over and over each day?
