Sand in oil paint?

Technical question: when I paint on the beach, I usually get a little sand in the paint. At first this was a nuisance, but I came to like the textural change. Are there any negative effects on the permanence of the paint, or anything else? I would like to try a painting with sand mixed in the paint.

Hi All,

I need help in applying varnish in the painting. I found the idea from "homework" by Morgan Weistling and there he said , spray varnish every next day on painting. But my confusion is , why it is needed to varnish everyday and what if painting is not completely dry? After varnish should i wait little time to start painting or not needed? Lots of confusion in this point, please throw some idea.

Hi,

I am totally confused about establishing correct value in a painting.Mainly in shadow area. What are the value we can put in shadow? what about reflected light, in value scale? Please help, i am not able to keep seperate shadow and light family.

toxicity of Liquin

I used Liquin as a medium exclusively for about three years. Lately I have switched to walnut oil. Having read the MSDS on one of the Liquin ingredients I a pretty concerned about its toxicity, although I really like the medium. Would welcome opinions from the community.

The Cleanest Light Pink Help?

Hi everyone,

I need a wee bit of help with a commission work of pure light pink roses, and for my taste I cannot seem to mix an extremely "pure" light pink.

I don't think I have ever painted pink anything where the color was dominant, and cannot recall ever learning about pinks.

I have all the usual artists colors, so if anyone has any input I would be most grateful,

There is so much I don't know about what I can do on a canvas without damaging the surface.

Dry paintings done with Liquin

This is my first post on Artist Daily. I have a number of paintings, now dry, that were done using Liquin as the medium. I can see some areas I would like to change. Can I paint directly over the dry painting using Liquin or do I need to spray an alkyd based retouch varnish first?

Problems stretching canvas...

Hello!

I would like to start by saying I’m not new to stretching canvas and have been stretching my own canvases for a number of years. However, recently I have encountered a problem that has been causing me some frustration!

The problem concerns sagging. I previously used a fairly heavy weight cotton canvas, I would stretch it and staple it to the stretcher pulling on opposite sides and pulling towards the corners. I was always taught to paint the unprimed canvas with water to get it tight and remove any wrinkles in the surface. With the heavy weight cotton canvas it would go as tight as a drum, become perfectly smooth and then once dried would still be tight enough to paint on.

I’m now using a far lighter canvas (as I could not afford the heavy any longer!). I stretched it in exactly the same way and applied a little water to get the canvas taut, but when it had dried it was very saggy. For the last ten or so canvases I have stretched I have had to then go back and re-stretch; on an A3 sized canvas I take in as much as 0.5cm in each direction.

My question is, why is this happening? And is there a way of stretching lighter weight canvas without having to re-stretch? Am I doing something terribly wrong!?

My first post - opinions sought on a painting

One of my favorite artist is Childe Hassam (1859-1935) during his younger years

(1880-1900). I did some studies of one of my favorite Boston street scenes

and finally an acrylic study 24 x 30 which I overlaid with oil. The size is a bit smaller than

the original and I changed some things around. It's mostly a learning study and to better

understand the skills of Childe. Any criticism is appreciated.

Hey friends oily color is good or make your painting better or attractive.because these color's are not die for long time.and it contain vegetable oil foe that purpose's.

You can get the oil from the oil expeller there are oil seed and extract the oil from the oil seed and then filtering the oil that is extract.and the for this many tools are used and equipments for it.like seed cracker for that extract the oil from the oil seed and seed cleaner for cleaning the seed from the wasted material.Bucket Elevator to contain the oil that is in large amount and and keep it for long time.

Helo, i am new in oil painting, only did 3 painting so far this is my 4 painting, its getting nice this painting but i reach a point where i never did this colors.

My biggest problems so far is getting the real color i need for the painting.

btw this is my first post here ^^ loved the website , i started painting oil in like 4 months, made 3 paintings so far, because i am learning i try to replicate in oil images i love , i try to add something new every time, this is the first time i make a more realistic face and air. Mixing Rich Darks

This week, I shared some advice on mixing rich and transparent darks with a couple of friends. This is something I've learned directly from painting with Richard Schmid. Don't know how many of you have heard of the Putney Painters - a small group of artists that paint along side of Richard Schmid and Nancy Guzik.

I can't even begin to say how many things I've learned about oil painting from them, but thought I'd share a tip here that I posted on my personal blog yesterday.

Darks look deeper and richer when they are transparent and when they are warm rather than cool.

So for my accent darks, I mix transparent Oxide Red (Rembrandt) with just a touch of Thalo green for a rich, almost black but warm and transparent color. Dark mixtures that use bluer tones - such as ultramarine blue are great for distant darks since blue/cooler tones don't appear as dark as warmer tones.

Darks in the painting below were painted with Thalo Green, Transparent Oxide Red and a touch of Alizarin Crimson. "Daughter" 6x8, Oil on Linen. - this was painted from life during a Putney Painter session.
