2008, 18"x24" Compressed charcoal stick on newsprint

Hi, everyone. This was a homework assignment from my Drawing 1 class a year ago--it was one of my first attempts at using a mirror as a reference (which I thought was the best way of practicing drawing portraits). I would just like some tips on how I can push this further and I would like to know whether I should keep the gestural style. Thank you!

The style is fine.

The suggestion I would make is to bring the value down on the left side of the head where it turns to shadow. To me it seems a little light and brings the left side of the head too far forward..

Draw on...
