can i use a regular titanium white alkyd paint as substitute for oil ground? can i put it onto my gessoed canvas and use it after a few days? would the effect be the same and would there be no problem in the future?
is there anyone who knows this, please? just wanna know.
There is a book by Ralph Meyer that covers this type of question. If you go to the manufacturer's website you might be able to find information. A good place to start may be www.weberart.com. However, if you email them a question, don't hold your breath waiting for an answer.
Sorry, the author on that book is Ralph Mayer and the book is The Artist's Handbook of Materials and Techniques. There is also information on this site about mediums that may talk about using alkyd paints as an under-painting or primer.
Hello xnr,
I'm sorry that I didnt' see your question much earlier. Thanks for bringing it to our attention again.
It sounds like you want to use the alkyd oils to paint the underpainting rather than use them for the gesso application, correct? If your piece already has gesso, otherwise known as ground on the substrate, then you don't need to add another layer of ground in alkyds.
You can simply start using your alkyds on the surface and then paint over with oil, if you'd like. I'm not sure what brand you are using, but you can also contact the manufacturer to make sure that the alkyds will adhere to the gesso or ground that you have on the substrate.

Thank you for all your replies. It helped a lot. I would want to try painting on oil based canvas and see what the result would be.
