People liked participating in Drawing Day, so we are going to hold occasional drawing days keyed to themes.

Let's start with a 4th of July Drawing Day. I love July 4th--it's a fun summer holiday without the weight of gift-giving obligations or the questions of faith, thus making it less stressful and more inclusive. For Americans it often means a day when we think about how much we love our country. This Drawing Day won't just be for Americans, however.

For this Drawing Day, let's post a drawing that in some way celebrates our love for where we live, be it Peoria or Patagonia.

I'm excited about this one. Will I try to interpret the building in which I live? Maybe a subway car rumbling along the elevated track at 125th Street. A coupla ears of fresh corn? Maybe just a hazy city sky. Or perhaps I'll draw my home state of Kentucky, from memory...

I'm in Bob!  There's much to draw here next to the Smokey Mountains!

It's a good thing I packed my drawing pad for this trip to Canada.

So count me in...

Oh, I love this!  It will be fun to see a little slice of where everyone's from!  I think I'll do something from my garden.  It's my favorite place to make art!

I guess I will start the post again for today's Drawing Day, since I need to head out to the city for the artfair and cookout.

I decided to do CloudGate or the bean (nick name for the chicagoans). A bit of the background for my choosing this subject. I came to this country to Chicago 30 years ago and lived in the city for 7 years while I'm studying and I love this country and the city of Chicago. I am now living in the surburb but can't wait to go back and live in the city some day. My favorite places are the Art institute museum and the Palette and Chisel. The famous landmark closest to the art institute is this cloudgate which shiny surface reflects the city skyline and the people standing nearby. Depending on the time of the day, it is just amazing to look at the changing reflections from it. I used pencil and graphite. This is a bit of a departure from my portrait drawings and paintings, but I had lots of fun doing it.

My drawing for the July 4th Drawing Day is of the Peace Bridge. This bridge connects Buffalo, NY with Ft. Erie, Ontario. To me the bridge represents the best in all countries -- finding ways to live peacefully and build “bridges.” The bridge itself is not all that attractive, but what it stands for is important.

When I was a kid we could cross into Canada and just answer a few questions and the customs officer would let us pass freely. People from the US would go to Ft. Erie for their wonderful beaches and great food and Crystal Beach park. Ft. Erie residents would come to Buffalo for our great food (we like to eat a lot up here in the north) and city life. We are still able to enjoy each other’s countries, but the sense of innocence is gone and with it some of the enjoyment. Hopefully, the Peace Bridge and what it stands for, will always be nurtured across the globe.

OK, I couldn’t make up my mind, so I also drew the natural wonder that is a bit down the Niagara River from the Peace Bridge. Last week I took my kids to photograph and draw Niagara Falls -- a truly beautiful place. I tried to capture a sense of scale and power.

We recently retired to Leesburg, Florida and this drawing is of some of the stately palms in Fairchild Gardens in Coral Gables.  I am so thankful for such a beautiful country to live in.

i didn't get to the big graphite drawing because ... life happens. Off to a friend's rooftop to paint the Hudson before dark. I'll try to post my prelim drawing for that.

i love the beautiful building in which i live!

I can't post drawings here due to a technical difficulty!  So sorry I couldn't participate, but I am enjoying everyone else's work!

Dear Paul,

Wow!  OUTSTANDING CHARCOALS!  Talk about ICONIC PLACES: Niagara Falls! Awesome, you really captured the rocks and mist....and I like the  compositional format for the bridge.

I drew a line in the sky on July 4th....across our nation! Got back to see some fireworks.

I am "drawing a conclusion" for this event: There is no place like home!

Happy 4th a day late.

Kathy

My entry for Drawing Day!  Sorry about the lateness.  I was away from home in the chalets of Gatlinburg for a 3 day weekend.

Beautiful drawings everyone!! My husband and I set out for one of our favorite places on the fourth - the Sunshine Skyway Fishing pier below St. Pete, Fl. for a late afternoon fishing trip. I toted along my sketchbook and pencils and had intended to sketch the numerous pelicans and/or the new Skyway Bridge, but when we arrived I noticed a couple of people trying to lure and catch a pelican in the water below. I asked if they were with the Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary and they were and the pelican was injured and trailing about four feet of fishing line behind him. So after numerous attempts to lure him away from the other pelicans, they finally were able to drop a net over him and bring him up to the top of the bridge where they removed three different fishing hooks, four feet of tangled fishing line, and then proceeded to check him over to see if he had to go to the sanctuary for treatment. I had recently taken an advanced rescue class with the sanctuary, so this was very fascinating for me to observe first-hand. So much so that the sun set during the process and I completely lost my daylight to sketch. We did get in some fishing however and saw some gorgeous fireworks over St. Pete and Bradenton. Glad that everyone had a wonderul holiday and a chance to do some beautiful drawings!

The drawing I did on July 4th is a view looking up through the trees in coastal Georgia.  It was done with Sharpie markers and other markers as well as colored pencil.  I have tried to post it to you, but have not been successful.  Do you have any suggestions?
