Welcome to ALL MEDIA PHOTO CHALLENGE #40 - February 2014
Challenge: Create artwork based on any or all of these photos and themes. Use any medium and any style. Stick to the photo(s) exactly or just use them as a starting point - feel free to crop, change colors, composition, add or subtract elements or take a complete departure. In other words, HAVE FUN and keep painting!
I was wondering about what theme to use. It is starting at times to look like Spring here there are new shoots forming on trees and shrubs but then some of you are still under feet of snow and then on the other side of the world you are going into Fall. Soooo!
Theme, CHANGE and renewal. this can be simply new seasons or personal change as artists. A change in the way we look at things or approach our art. A commitment to try new things, mediums, styles ideas. Change can be scary or a wonderful challenge how will you go forward this month? That little voice telling us I can't draw this or I am not ready for this will keep us doing the same things for ever so don't listen. Just this month try something new. We are all students here learning and failing and surprising ourselves it is okay to try, you don't have to make a work of art the first time just try. Those of you who are new might want to go back to the beginning and read through Sammy's lessons on Priciples of Composition. She covers several things that we all need to review from time to time.
I have tried to bring a variety of references for you to dabble with so grab a pencil, paint glues or whatever and create! Try an abstract, paint with just one red, blue, yellow and white, change the picture to black and white and come up with your own colours, Use just one colour and black and white. Crop, paste, mix and match. But have fun!!

Splendid selection yet again. Thanks Karen and Jen
winter sunset, from memory after taking the dog for a walk! Water colour...very quick sketch before the memory of it faded!!!!
feel free to make constructive c/c...no digital alterations please
Sarah, good for you starting us off with a lovely Wintery sunset. That touch of orange in the greying purple clouds captures the last of the light nicely against the bare trees.
Jen...fabulous selection. Wish I had time to do them all.
C&Cs always welcome
Sarah you captured the sunset beautifully. Sarah this months selection is all Jen. I will have April.
Hello Jen and Karen...I realised my mistake after I had posted but had to wait until now to apologise.
Jen, great reference photos for your challenge and an interesting theme. I'm looking forward to what it will inspire.
Sarah, lovely sunset with a nice touch of warmth and the silhouetted trees and branches. I can see why you would want to capture it in paint.
Bonnie C & C most welcome / appreciated
"Life Goes On", 15.5" x 11.5", acrylic on mat board, 1-10-2013
This tree is at the Lady Bird Johnston Research Gardens, Austin, TX.
Sarah, beautiful sunset. I especially like the colors in the sky.
Charlie, thanks. Another early bird! I love the gnarly old tree hanging in there surrounded by all the wild flowers. The gardens are a great place to visit. Sorry about the bold sometimes it won't turn off!
Thanks Bonnie and Karen. Karen you don't have to do them all just find a couple and let loose.
Sarah, no apology needed, I understood the confusion. :)
Charlie nice job on the tree bark. I can't wait to see some wildflowers again. It seems like forever ago.
Hello Karen, Bonnie and Charlie...thank you. Saw another similar sunset yesterday but it is freezing cold and wet today and so definitely didn't please any shepherds!
Another sunset........took more time over this one but it is small 6" x 3" approx. Watercolour heavy rough paper.
Hello Charlie, I had a quick glance and thought you had painted an abstract but then of course I 'twigged' it. Interesting version and good take on the renewal theme.
