I am entering a Juried show with my first miniature canvas and I am told the smaller the canvas the more you see the grain. How much is this ever a deterrent to judges if they notice your gesso allows grain to still be seen.
Bev- the grain should not be seen at all if you put 2 or three coats of gesso on first.
Doug, Thank you for letting me know but for some reason I coated with Gesso five times and still a few specks of grain came through in two areas. Maybe I bought bad Gesso.
Bev-did you sandpaper the gesso ? That should smooth down the grain.
I didn't realize on such a small surface I would need to do that. That's what I did wrong. Well Im going to process my paintings with their flaws and hope for the best that they will understand and let me return prepared for next year. I didn't have enough time to get ready for this one but wanted to do it and show my support. Now that I realize it takes much more for the preparation I will need more time for next year to do it the right way.
